Official Statement – Hardin County Sheriff Johnny Alexander
As I prepare this statement, I continue to consider how the loss of Deputy Matthew Locke has been perhaps the most challenging time I have faced in my lifelong service to both this country as a member of the military and as a member of law enforcement in Hardin County. Through the intense sadness and remorse, I have been humbled by the outpouring of support, encouragement and unity following the tragic loss of one of our own.
On behalf of myself, our department and our community, I want to extend my deepest gratitude and condolences to the family members of Deputy Matthew Locke. Simply put, Deputy Locke was a committed servant and fearless protector of others. His decision to pursue careers of service and sacrifice prove Deputy Locke was pursuing an internal calling that far exceeds a career. Deputy Locke was one of the most dedicated officers I have had the privilege to know, and our loss of Deputy Locke extends far beyond this department and this community, as was exemplified by the Sea of Blue, the countless faces lining the roadways of his funeral procession or the men and women standing shoulder to shoulder for the Pre-Game tribute to Deputy Locke on Friday night. Without question, we all lost a hero.
In the immediate moments and days following this tragic loss of Deputy Locke, our department was immediately supported by several agencies and additional officers. Despite my best efforts, I could not begin to specifically thank each and every one of you for fear of inadvertently omitting someone. There were so many nameless people who worked as much in the background as those serving on the frontlines. So to everyone who assisted us in any way, I want to say thank you. Thank you for being there in our greatest time of need. We are blessed with so many fine men and women throughout our emergency management services throughout the country, and our department is grateful for all of you. Whether it was law enforcement agents from numerous departments, medical staff, dispatchers, fire department personnel or the countless others who have assisted us, everyone stepped up in so many areas. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything. While I pray we do not face another tragedy, we will always be there for our brothers and sisters in any capacity.
I also want to thank this community. In a time where it seems there is so much division, it was humbling to see the unity displayed throughout social media and in-person as so many of you supported Deputy Locke’s family while recognizing his ultimate sacrifice.
Our department received messages of support from individuals and other departments throughout this country as well as countries throughout the world. Some sent cruisers and patrol cars for the Sea of Blue. In fact, some departments and organizations sent representatives from hundreds of miles away to simply be present at the memorial service for Deputy Locke despite never meeting him. There are no words to express how much each and every effort to show support means to all of us.
Lastly, I ask you to join us in keeping the Locke family in your thoughts and prayers. If you know them personally, be there to support them and comfort them as best we can. We must never forget Deputy Locke and his service to Hardin County, and part of this remembrance is being there for those who he leaves behind today and in the days ahead. Pray for the brave men and women of this department who have lost their brother. They are now forced to move forward with protecting this community through their grief, and without the unwavering support and invaluable leadership Deputy Locke provided. It is my greatest honor to join these brave men and women who comprise the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department by serving as your sheriff. We are grateful for all you have done for us through the agony of this tragic loss. Your support and encouragement means more to us than you can possibly know. Thank you for everything.
Respectfully,
Sheriff Johnny Alexander
